About the Artist

I’m Malcolm Christie (they/them), a metalsmith, ceramicist, and sculptor. I grew up in Ventura, CA, and now reside and work in the Bay Area. In Spring of 2028, I will earn my Master’s in Fine Arts in Jewelry and Metal Arts, Ceramics, and Sculpture and my Master’s in Arts in Visual and Critical Studies from California College of the Arts. I work as a Learning Resource Coach as an academic coach at CCA and assistant to CCA’s access and disability department. Themes of connection, mental health, nature, death, and queer identity drive my work and often overlap in pieces. My goal is to connect and make work to deepen my connections to my communities.  Outside of art, I enjoy spending time in nature, being with friends, taking naps with my kitty Jupiter, and playing board games.

My current practice focuses on the trans community, making art to connect those today with those of the past. Given the extremely scary and political climate in the U.S. I want to make work to bring joy, excitement, and history of perseverance to the present.

I use casting, fabrication, and hand-building in my work. for its versatility and malleability when starting projects, but during the process, I begin to lean toward mixed media due to the quality of other materials, like ceramic which can add a different feeling to the work. I use repetitive theme of identity throughout my pieces to tie them together; the themes are often based on what is affecting me in the present. I am neurodivergent and my mind is often filled with many thoughts at once, which is reflected in the numerous themes in each piece.

My current work focuses on trans history. I am making a T Party to remember and bring together trans people in history. I am thinking of Judy Chicago’s Dinner Party and Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. I am making tea cups in many mediums, connecting them to the personality I can find of each person through archives and research.
